The experience
Ad Diriyah sits on the western bank of the Wadi Hanifah, a dry riverbed that once flowed through the capital of the Najd from the 15th century until the early 18th century. The tour starts with a drive from your hotel to this UNESCO-listed site, where ancient mud-brick palaces, watchtowers and administrative halls have survived for centuries. An English-speaking guide walks you through the two main districts that make up the restored heritage area.
The Al Bujairy district is a maze of twisting streets lined with low-lying mud huts now transformed into heritage sites. This quarter was home to Mohammed bin Abdul Wahab, the religious scholar whose influence shaped the region. From there, you move to the At-Turaif district, the citadel-marked primary quarter where the Al Saud family held their original seat of power. In 1745, the city was named the country's capital, and you visit key structures including the Guest House, the Bath House, and Salwa Palace.
The tour includes an air-conditioned vehicle, hotel pickup, and refreshments of coffee, tea and snacks throughout the morning or afternoon. The pace suits all fitness levels, and the whole experience runs between four and six hours depending on how long you spend at each site.
