Summary

Red dunes, ancient carvings and wild canyons on a Hesma day trip

You’ll ride deep into Bajdah & Hesma desert by 4x4 with a local guide, see ancient rock carvings and wildlife like oryx and gazelle at the reserve, wander lush canyon gardens hidden among red dunes and end your day with Saudi coffee as the sunset paints the sand orange. Expect some bumps—and maybe an unexpected moment of quiet wonder.

experience

What’s the experience like?

I’ll just say it — I almost missed the pickup because my coffee spilled everywhere (classic). But our driver waited, grinning like he’d seen this before. The drive out from Tabuk felt endless at first, sand getting redder as we left the city behind. When we finally stopped at these old rock inscriptions, our guide Khaled started tracing patterns with his finger and telling stories about ancient traders crossing here. I tried to imagine what it was like back then — honestly, it’s hard when you’re standing there squinting at sun-bleached stone and someone’s phone keeps pinging in their pocket. Still, I liked that part.

The 4x4 ride after that was… let’s call it “bouncy.” There’s no real road, just tire tracks through dunes and those huge sand mountains in Bajdah and Hesma. At one point we passed a herd of oryx — they looked almost painted against the pale sand. Lunch was simple but good: flatbread warm from the sun, dates sticky enough to glue your fingers together, Saudi coffee poured by a guy who didn’t speak much English but smiled every time I tried to say “shukran.” Li laughed when I tried to say it in Mandarin too — probably butchered it.

We made a stop at this place they called the Secret Garden canyon. It’s weird seeing green tucked into all that rust-colored rock. The air smelled different there — cooler somehow, with this sharp plant scent I still can’t name. We hiked a little through narrow paths where your shoes crunch on gravel and you have to duck under rocks. Khaled pointed out some old cave openings in the Pharaoh Mountains; he said people used to shelter there during storms.

By sunset we were up on a dune watching the sky go orange-red over the desert. Everyone got quiet for a minute except for some kid giggling about sand in her shoes. I thought about how small you feel out there — not lonely exactly, more like you’re part of something way older than you are. Anyway, if you’re looking for a day trip from Tabuk that’s not just photos but feels real (and maybe gets your shoes full of sand), this Bajdah & Hesma desert adventure is worth it.
