The experience
The tour starts at one of the oldest gates of the old town and moves through Al-Balad on foot. You'll see the restored houses that now hold museums, art galleries and coffee shops, and walk through the markets that have operated here for generations. The Nassif House Museum, one of the most prominent buildings in the district, is a stop on the route, as is the oldest mosque in the old town and Zawiya 97, a cultural space and crafts hub. A heritage house turned into a coffee shop and museum rounds out the stops. Museum entry fees are covered in the price.
Your guide is a certified local with deep roots in Jeddah and a license to lead tours (No. 40000902). The guide speaks English or Arabic depending on your preference, and can point you toward the details and stories that don't appear in guidebooks: the layered history of the district, the way cultures have shaped the architecture and the daily life that still moves through these streets. The tour runs three hours and includes bottled water and local drinks as you walk.
Al-Balad has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014, recognized for its role as a major pilgrimage gateway to Makkah for centuries. The district's coral-stone buildings and narrow lanes are navigable by wheelchair, and all surfaces and areas are accessible. Note that some historic houses have no lifts inside.
