The experience

On your first afternoon in São Tomé, a boat takes you from the fishing community to Santana Islet, a small rocky formation that rises like a turtle shell from the sea. The water here turns a deep marine blue where sunlight meets the crystalline shallows. You swim and wade in the bay. At low tide, the cave inside the islet opens up to explore. Your guide, speaking English, Portuguese or French, walks you through the history of the fishermen who work these waters and the boats they use.

After the islet, the tour moves to the Roça Água Izé, a colonial-era plantation inland. You see the old plantation houses, the former administrator's residence, and the architectural remains of the old hospital. Then the route turns coastal to Boca do Inferno, a dramatic rock formation at the water's edge. Lunch follows at Miradouro restaurant, positioned on a cliff with views across the bay toward São Tomé.

The tour runs between two and four hours depending on the tide and how long you spend in the water. Pickup from your hotel is included, as is the boat ticket. Children from age four can join. A local guide's additional commentary at the plantation costs five euros per person if you choose it. Lunch is separate.
