The experience
The tour starts in the morning from São Tomé city and splits into five distinct routes, so you pick the one that matches what you want to see. The Northern Route takes you through Obô Natural Park and the Coffee Museum, stopping at St. Nicholas Falls and the historic Roça Monte plantation. The Central Route strings together the island's middle: Blue Lagoon, traditional villages like Neves and Mucumbli, and more of the old roça estates. The Peak Route climbs toward Pico de São Tomé, the country's highest point, passing through Roça Agua Izé, Mouth of Hell (a rock formation where waves crash against the shore), and Mioba Falls. The Fishing Route is hands-on: you learn to make a fishing rod using local techniques, prepare bait, fish in the river with traditional methods, then cook your catch for dinner while musicians and dancers from the community join in. The Express option compresses the highlights into a shorter day.
Transportation is private (just you and your guide), and the guide speaks English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian or one of two other languages. Pickup from your hotel is included. Lunch happens at a restaurant, a roça, or riverside depending on which route you take, and it's built into the price. The tour runs from morning through afternoon on a single day, or can stretch across two days if you want both a northern and central route. Children from age 2 are welcome, though the operator notes the tour isn't suitable for travelers with spinal injuries, pregnancy, or serious heart conditions.
Each stop has its own rhythm: an hour in the city, 45 minutes at a waterfall, 30 minutes in a village, time to swim or simply sit. The fishing route adds a layer of participation. You're not watching. You're making the rod, baiting the hook, casting, and cooking. By the end, you've moved through colonial history, nature reserves, and working communities, and you've eaten something you helped prepare.

Is this one for you?Pick the Northern or Central Route if you want to move through history and landscape at a steady pace with time to photograph and absorb each stop. Choose the Peak Route if you're drawn to the highest point and geological formations. The Fishing Route suits travelers who want to participate in something (making the rod, catching food, cooking it) rather than observe. It's the most physically involved option and ends with a community celebration. The Express option works if you have only a few hours and want the main highlights without the full day.
