You’ll paddle through peaceful Rwandan countryside, spot local wildlife, and meet friendly faces along the Mukungwa River—all with an expert guide making sure you get the most out of your half-day adventure.
We met up just outside Musanze, at La Silene café—the kind of place where you can grab a quick coffee and hear the odd rooster crowing from the nearby houses. Our guide, Jean-Claude, handed out paddles and gave us a quick rundown on what to expect. The river looked calm that morning, with a bit of mist still hanging over the water. I could smell wet grass and wood smoke drifting from someone’s breakfast fire across the fields.
Paddling was easy—no wild rapids here, just gentle currents carrying us past banana groves and kids waving from the banks. At one bend, we paused so Jean-Claude could point out a kingfisher darting low over the water. He told us about otters sometimes popping up if you’re lucky (we didn’t spot any this time). The air was full of bird calls—some familiar, others totally new to me. We passed a fisherman untangling his net; he grinned and shouted something in Kinyarwanda as we floated by.
The whole trip felt relaxed but never boring. Sometimes we’d drift quietly, other times we’d pick up speed just for fun. If you’re into nature or photography, there’s plenty to see—especially around the Twin Lakes area where the hills roll down right to the water’s edge. By noon, my arms were pleasantly tired and my shoes were a bit muddy (should’ve worn sandals). We ended back at our starting point with bottled water waiting for us—simple but refreshing after a few hours in the sun.
