The experience
The Congo Nile Trail runs 50 kilometers along Lake Kivu's shoreline, and this 4-day version covers it on foot from Gisenyi to Kibuye. Each day you hike through the rolling hills Rwanda is known for, descending to the lake and the villages built along it. The route is cultural by design: you walk past coffee plantations, meet people living in the communities you pass through, and eat what they cook. Sambaza (small fish from the lake), Imvange (potatoes, green banana, beans and vegetables), and avocado with cabbage and vinegar. Swimming happens in the lake itself between walks.
Accommodation, all meals and snacks are included across the four days. A guide who speaks English or French leads the group and arranges the stops. The trail is moderate in difficulty but steady: you should be comfortable walking for several hours and climbing hills. Pickup from Gisenyi is included, so you do not need to arrange your own transport to the start.
What’s included

Is this one for you?Choose this 4-day version if you want to walk the full Congo Nile Trail without rushing. The longer timeframe lets you spend mornings and afternoons on the hills, swim in the lake, and stay overnight in the villages rather than day-tripping from one town. The shorter 2-day options cover less ground and less of the lakeside communities.
