The experience
How do you fit a medieval fortress and a wine region into one day from Cluj? This tour leaves at 8:30 a.m. and heads straight into Sighisoara, one of Europe's last inhabited medieval fortresses and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Your guide walks you through the fortress's dark history (including its connection to Vlad the Impaler) as you climb the Covered Staircase to the Church on the Hill. If the Clock Tower is open (closed Mondays), you can scale it for a bird's-eye view of the citadel's red-tiled roofs, or skip the climb and explore the colourful medieval streets on your own. The cobblestones and city hills mean you'll be on your feet for 2–3 hours across the morning.
After lunch, the route turns south into the Tarnava wine region, a landscape of rolling hills and traditional Saxon villages. Here you taste seven distinct wine varieties (zesty Rieslings, fragrant local blends and others) each paired with palate cleansers to let you taste the differences. The tasting is the centrepiece of the afternoon, and it happens in the heart of the wine country itself, not in a tourist shop. You return to Cluj in the evening, so the full day is accounted for in the 10-hour window.
Hotel pickup and drop-off are included, as is all transport by private vehicle or minibus. Your guide speaks English and drives, so there's no separate driver to coordinate with. The only costs beyond the tour price are your lunch (not included) and any entry tickets if you choose to go inside the Clock Tower or Church on the Hill. Both are optional, and you can buy tickets at the door.

Is this one for you? This tour works best if you're comfortable with 2–3 hours of walking on cobblestones and uneven medieval streets, and if you want to see both the fortress and the wine region in a single day rather than splitting them across two. The fixed itinerary and 10-hour window mean you move at a set pace through both stops, which is what makes both fit into one departure.

Top questions
What languages is the guide in?
Live guide in English and French.
What is the Covered Staircase and why do we climb it?
The Covered Staircase is a 17th-century passage built into the fortress walls, leading up to the Church on the Hill. It's one of Sighisoara's most recognizable features and gives you access to the church and a higher vantage point over the citadel. Climbing it is part of the standard route through the fortress.
Can I skip the Clock Tower if I don't want to climb more stairs?
Yes. The Clock Tower is optional, and if it's closed on Mondays or you prefer not to climb, you can use that time to wander the colourful medieval streets on your own instead. Inside visits to both the Clock Tower and Church on the Hill can be substituted with free time to explore.
Is lunch included in the tour price?
Lunch is not included. You'll have time to eat in Sighisoara after the fortress visit, and you can choose where and what to eat. The seven-wine tasting happens after lunch in the Tarnava wine region.
What kind of wines will I taste?
The tasting includes seven distinct varieties from the Tarnava region (zesty Rieslings, fragrant local blends and others) chosen to show how the Tarnava River and Saxon heritage shape the award-winning bottles made there. Each wine is paired with palate cleansers so you can taste the differences between them.
Do I need sturdy shoes for this tour?
Yes. The medieval streets of Sighisoara are made of cobblestones, and the route includes city hills and potentially slippery or uneven surfaces. Sturdy, non-slip walking shoes are highly recommended. If you climb the Clock Tower and Covered Staircase, you'll navigate up to 350 steps, and some sections don't have handrails.
