You’ll get hands-on with real beekeeping in Romania—open hives, taste honey right at its source, and share a traditional meal with locals who live this life every day. It’s not just about honey; it’s about slowing down and seeing how much goes on in a single bee’s world.
The first thing I noticed when we pulled up to the apiary was the gentle hum—almost like a low summer song—coming from the hives tucked between wildflowers. Our guide, Andrei, greeted us with a big grin and handed out those funny mesh hats (trust me, you’ll want one). The air smelled sweet and grassy, and there was this peaceful quiet except for the occasional bark from one of the watchdogs lounging in the shade.
Andrei walked us through the basics of beekeeping—how each hive works like its own tiny city. He showed us how to spot the queen (she’s bigger than you’d think) and explained why Romanian honey is so prized. We got to watch as he carefully opened a hive and pointed out how the bees organize their work. I even tried holding a frame full of bees—felt weirdly calming once you get over that first buzz of nerves.
Lunch was set up right by the edge of the woods: homemade cheese, tomatoes still warm from the sun, crusty bread, and local wine. For dessert? Fresh honey straight from the comb—sticky fingers guaranteed. If you’re lucky with timing, you might catch wildflowers blooming everywhere or see clouds rolling in over the fields. The whole day felt like stepping into another rhythm, far away from city noise.
Your guide will provide protective gear and explain everything step by step. As long as you don’t have a bee allergy, it’s very safe and beginner-friendly.
If weather doesn’t allow for outdoor activities, parts of the experience may move indoors or be adjusted for safety. Your guide will keep you informed ahead of time.

The trip usually lasts most of the day—including travel time from Bucharest, lessons at the apiary, lunch, and tastings.
Your private car (or minibus) comes with an English-speaking guide who stays with you all day. All travel costs are covered—gasoline, parking, tolls—and lunch at the beekeeper’s place is included too. You’ll get to try several honeybee products for dessert.
