The experience
The Făgăraș Mountains rise in the heart of Romania's Southern Carpathians, home to Moldoveanu Peak at 2,544 meters: the country's highest point. The range is ringed by sharp ridges and glacial lakes, including Bâlea Lake, which sits at 2,042 meters on the famous Transfăgărășan route. That road, built in the 1970s and stretching roughly 90 kilometers, is one of Europe's most dramatic mountain passes. Your guide knows these peaks and knows how to move through them at a pace that works for you.
You pick the hiking level before you book: an easy walk runs 3 to 5 hours, a medium hike takes 5 to 6 hours, or a difficult climb stretches 6 to 9 hours. The guide builds a custom route around your choice, so you're not following a fixed itinerary that doesn't fit. A private transfer with an air-conditioned vehicle picks you up from your location, gets you to the trailhead, and brings you back at the end of the day. Bring appropriate trekking clothes, good walking boots and rain jackets. Walking poles are available to rent if you order them in advance. Pack a small backpack, water and snacks for lunch.
