The experience
The tour starts in the oldest square in Cluj, where you'll see the Franciscan church and the Carolina Obelisk, then moves to the oldest civilian building in the city and a church connected to one of Hungary's greatest kings. From there you walk to St Michael's, one of the biggest medieval churches in Transylvania, and the first Baroque church built in what is now Romania. The guide points out the 15th-century city walls hidden along narrow streets and shows you one of the few defense towers still standing from the medieval fortifications, explaining how the guilds shaped the city's growth.
You'll pass the headquarters of Romania's second most important university, dating back over a century, and visit a 15th-century church known for hosting the city's best organ concerts and holding one of the largest coat of arms collections in the region. The walk ends at Avram Iancu Square, where the National Theatre and surrounding buildings went up starting in the late 19th century. The whole route covers ground on foot, so wear comfortable shoes.
