The experience

You start in Miercurea Ciuc where your guide meets you with a private 4x4 vehicle. The first half hour follows village roads through the Ciuc Basin until the last settlement, where the wilderness trails begin. Your guide reads the weather and local conditions to shape the day. If you've chosen a sunrise departure, you'll climb to the Naskalat ridge (1553 m) to watch the light break across the mountains. The route then follows forest roads for 2 to 2.5 hours along the ridge and through dense woodland toward the Bicaz Gorges and Hasmas National Park.

At the border of the national park, you stop for a picnic made from local products. If you've opted for the hike, your guide leads you up Ecem Peak (1707 m) on an easy trek that takes 2 to 3 hours round-trip. From the bare ridge you see silence and panorama: the surrounding peaks spread out below. When you return to the vehicle, you drive deeper into the mountains on remote forest routes to reach Haromkut, a small dispersed village where a local family cooks fresh trout they've raised. Around the village you'll see horses, sheep and oxen herds grazing with shepherds, the landscape unchanged by tourism.

From Haromkut you head toward the Bicaz Gorges through the Bicajel Valley, passing wooden houses, haystacks, dense forest and small waterfalls. You stop to walk along Red Lake and admire the massive gorge walls. If you've booked the via ferrata extension, your guide outfits you with a harness and takes you up the rocky face of the Kiscohard Massif on a 1 to 1.5 hour climb using metal rungs, fixed ropes and an aerial bridge. The route is engineered to be secure for all levels, and the views from above take in Red Lake, the surrounding peaks and the gorges. If you've skipped the via ferrata, you ride back along the Kovacspeter ridge. Depending on time and where you're staying, you may visit the 1375 m Kovacspeter ridge to see summer shelters and the source of the Olt River before your guide drops you at your accommodation in Miercurea Ciuc or the Ciuc Basin.
