The Experience

Niagara Falls at Ste Suzanne opens the day, followed by the Church of Ste Anne, a Historic Monument since 1982, and the Bassin Bleu site. The route then moves to Notre Dame des Laves in Piton Sainte-Rose, the small pink church built in 1927, destroyed by cyclone, rebuilt, and then left standing untouched when lava from the 1977 eruption surrounded it—the event that made it a symbol on the island. Breakfast (coffee, pastries, juice) is served before departure.

Mid-morning brings you to the cove of the waterfalls, where the ocean meets crystal-clear water falling through dense coconut groves and vacoas trees. The landscape shifts when you drive the lava road through the Enclosure of the Volcano, a passage connecting the east and south of the island where centuries of eruptions outside the Enclosure have carved an extraordinary black terrain. Lunch happens at Cap Méchant in a small Creole restaurant, where you sit above coal-black lava cliffs that plunge into the ocean.

The afternoon closes at Langevin waterfall, the island's most famous cascade and one of its busiest, before the guide returns you to your hotel. Bottled water travels with you throughout the day. The tour runs seven to eight hours total and does not require any particular fitness level, though it is not recommended for pregnant travelers.
