Piton de la Fournaise volcano hike: Active crater with a guide
Walk inside an active volcano's enclosure and climb to the crater rim
This is a guided hike of Piton de la Fournaise volcano on Réunion Island, departing Wednesdays and Sundays with a professional mountain guide from the Reunion Mountain Office. You descend into the volcanic enclosure, traverse lava flows, and climb to the summit crater over 9 kilometers and 500 meters of elevation gain. Small groups stay under 12 people, and a French-speaking guide leads the entire route. If the enclosure is closed by prefectural order, the operator offers an alternative hike through the Plaine des Sables to view eruptions or past volcanic history instead.

The experience
The hike starts with a descent into the enclosure, the volcanic basin that holds the main cone. From there you walk across lava flows (the mineral landscape that tells the geological history of the island), and then begin the ascent to the summit crater. The route covers 9 kilometers with 500 meters of elevation gain over roughly 6 hours. A professional mountain guide leads the entire day and speaks only French. A working understanding of the language is necessary to follow the geology and the volcano's story as you move through it.
Access to the enclosure is reserved for groups with a professional guide, which is why this tour reaches terrain off-limits to independent hikers. If prefectural order closes the enclosure due to active eruption, the operator does not cancel: instead, a specialist leads you off the beaten track through the Plaine des Sables to catch a glimpse of the current eruption or to walk the sites of past ones. Either way, you get the volcano. The terrain is steep and lava is sharp. The altitude climbs above 2,000 meters, where weather can turn fast (rain, fog, wind), and cold arrives suddenly. Minimum age is 12 years old. Children must be accompanied by an adult, and the operator asks that anyone under 12 contact them in advance to discuss fitness for the terrain and the altitude.
A snack and a local drink are included. Bring water, sun protection, sturdy hiking boots with ankle support, and layers for cold and wind at altitude. Departures run every Wednesday and Sunday from the first registered group onward.

Is this one for you? This is a shared hike with a French-speaking guide, so it suits travelers who are comfortable in French, have solid hiking fitness, and want the geology explained as they climb. The small group size (12 maximum) and professional guide access to the enclosure are what make the summit crater reachable. Independent hikers cannot enter that zone.

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
Can I hike Piton de la Fournaise if the volcano is actively erupting?
If an eruption closes the enclosure by prefectural order, the hike does not cancel. Instead, your guide leads a route through the Plaine des Sables to view the current eruption or discover the sites of past ones, so you still experience the volcano's activity.
What language does the guide speak on this hike?
The guide leads the entire hike in French only. A working understanding of French is necessary to follow the geological explanations and the volcano's history throughout the day.
How steep is the terrain and how high do we climb?
The hike covers 9 kilometers with 500 meters of elevation gain, and the route reaches above 2,000 meters altitude. The terrain is steep, lava is sharp underfoot, and weather at that height can change fast, so sturdy hiking boots and layers are essential.
What age can children hike this volcano?
The minimum age is 12 years old. Children under 12 can hike only with special arrangement. Contact the operator in advance. Minors under 18 must be accompanied by an adult throughout the day.
