The experience
The tour leaves Alwakrah and heads straight into the dunes. Your guide adjusts the vehicle's tires for the sand, then you cruise through the desert toward Khor Al Udaid: a lagoon at the very end of Qatar where you can see Saudi Arabia across the water. The drive takes time and covers real ground. The sand itself is the point.
At Khor Al Udaid you swim in the gulf, then settle in to watch the sunset touch the water. As the light goes, you gather around a fire with your guide and share stories over warm Mauritanian tea. The BBQ arrives from one of Qatar's best grill restaurants, not camp food, but a proper meal. You eat, drink and sit with the fire while the day cools into night.
The return journey to Alwakrah takes roughly 90 minutes. The tires get pumped back up for the road, and you're dropped at Alwakrah Metro Station where the tour ends. Bring a camera. The sunset and the dunes give you pictures that stay.
