The Experience

I almost missed the first turn because our guide was already cracking jokes about Condado’s endless options—apparently you can get lost just picking a beach. The van smelled faintly of coconut sunscreen (not mine), and the windows were fogged from the AC fighting the Puerto Rican sun. We zipped past pastel houses before landing in Old San Juan. I’d seen photos, but standing there with pigeons flapping overhead and some guy selling piraguas at the corner… it hits different in person.

We stopped for photos near the capitol—everyone trying to fit the blue cobblestones into their frame. Our guide, Luis, pointed out where his grandma used to buy bread (still open). He waved at a woman across the plaza who shouted something back in Spanish I didn’t catch. It felt less like a tour, more like tagging along with someone who actually lives here. After that we cruised by beaches—Luis listed off names so fast I gave up remembering after Isla Verde—and then rolled through Calle Cerra for street art. Some murals are huge; one had a rooster so fierce I swear it stared me down.

The Placita of Santurce was next. There’s this fruit stand that smells like guava and overripe mangoes—sticky sweet air everywhere. We tried quenepa (I probably said it wrong; Luis laughed) and something pink I still don’t know the name of. My hands were sticky for hours but honestly didn’t care. Later we wandered into a food district where fried plantains sizzled behind glass counters and someone handed me a cup of cold passionfruit juice without asking if I wanted one. That’s just how it goes here.

By the end my shirt was salty from sweat and sea breeze, my phone full of crooked photos, and my head spinning a little from all the flavors—plus whatever that last drink was. If you want to see San Juan in flashes of color and noise instead of checking boxes… well, this is probably your day.
