The experience

Ever wonder what it feels like to stand between centuries? We rolled through Old San Juan in the morning: cobblestones still slick from last night’s rain, the air smelling faintly of coffee and sea. Our guide, Carlos, pointed at El Morro as we passed (“That wall’s older than most countries,” he said). I tried to imagine pirates out there. There was this quick stop near San Cristobal where everyone got out for photos: someone’s hat blew off and landed right by a stray cat sunning itself. I liked that cat.

We cruised into Santurce next: suddenly everything was color and murals and music sneaking out from open windows. At La Placita de Santurce, Carlos showed us where locals buy fruit (I grabbed a mango, sticky hands for the rest of the ride). He laughed when I tried to order coconut water in Spanish, probably butchered it. There were old men playing dominos under a faded umbrella. It felt like the city was showing us its quieter heartbeat away from the tourist crowds.

Then came Ocean Park Beach. The sand was warm but not too hot, and the breeze carried salt and something sweet I couldn’t place, maybe sunscreen or just happiness? We didn’t stay long, but I kicked off my shoes anyway. After that we drove by Condado Lagoon, the water almost glassy, and Carlos pointed out the Vanderbilt Hotel (opened in 1919! Who knew?). The whole thing only took about two hours but honestly felt fuller than some whole days I’ve spent traveling. I still think about that view of blue sky over pastel rooftops as we drove back.
