Paddle through water that glows when your oar cuts through it

Night kayaking in Laguna Grande, a mangrove reserve near San Juan, puts you in a two-person sit-on-top kayak where dinoflagellates, microscopic organisms, light up as you paddle. A guide leads the outing in English or Spanish, covering the ecosystem while you navigate the reserve. Transport from San Juan, a life jacket, and a brief kayaking lesson are included. The whole experience runs about four hours and requires moderate fitness and the ability to swim.

The experience

You arrive at the meeting point and get fitted with a US Coast Guard-approved life jacket, then receive a quick 101 lesson before heading out onto the water. The kayak is a two-person sit-on-top model, stable and forgiving for beginners. Once you're paddling through the mangrove forest, the guide points out the ecosystem around you and explains what you're seeing, then you paddle harder, and the water around your blade glows. The dinoflagellates respond to movement, so every stroke lights up the lagoon in a way you can't replicate anywhere else.

The outing is shared, so you'll paddle alongside other visitors, but the guide keeps the group small enough that you're not fighting for space or waiting around. Wear a swimsuit or lightweight synthetic clothing. You will get wet from the waist down, and the guide will tell you to leave jeans and valuables behind. Bring a towel and a change of clothes. Mosquito repellent is useful but not provided. Cameras work only inside a waterproof case or bag. Storage is available for anything you don't take on the water.

Transport from your San Juan hotel is included in the booking, so you don't arrange a separate ride to Fajardo. The four-hour window covers the drive, the lesson, the paddle and the return. You need to be comfortable in the water and have at least moderate fitness. The operator does not recommend this for anyone with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or pregnancy, and there's a 240-pound weight limit per person.

What’s included

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English and Spanish.

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What exactly glows in the water at Laguna Grande?

Dinoflagellates, microscopic organisms that produce light when they're disturbed by movement. Your paddle strokes trigger the glow, so the brighter you paddle, the more the water lights up around you.

Do I need kayaking experience to join this?

No. Everyone gets a 101 lesson before heading out, and the two-person sit-on-top kayaks are stable and forgiving for first-timers. You do need to be able to swim and have moderate fitness.

What time does the kayaking start?

The tour is a night paddle, so it departs after dark. Your hotel pickup time will be confirmed when you book, and the whole outing takes about four hours from pickup to return.

Can I bring my phone or camera?

Cameras work only inside a waterproof case or bag. Waterproof cell phone pouches are not provided, so bring your own if you want to photograph the glow. Anything you bring on the water risks getting wet or lost, so leave valuables behind.

What should I wear?

A swimsuit or lightweight synthetic clothing. You'll get wet from the waist down, so avoid jeans and sweats. Bring a towel and a change of clothes for after. Don't walk barefoot on the beach. Wear water shoes or sandals for safety.
