The Experience

The boat leaves Fajardo Marina after pickup completes across San Juan—the driver collects you from your hotel starting 2 to 2.5 hours before departure, depending on how many stops are on the route. Once everyone is aboard, the catamaran or power boat heads east along the coast, passing El Yunque National Forest and the quieter cays of Puerto Rico's east side. The ride itself is part of the tour: you see the landscape before you enter the water.

Icacos Island is the first stop. The boat moors in knee-deep crystal-clear water, and you wade straight off into white sand. Some travelers snorkel from the shore; others swim or sunbathe on the beach. There's no schedule here—you move at your own pace. Then the boat moves to a second stop over a living coral reef, where the captain moors for about an hour. This is where the snorkeling happens: you enter the water from the boat and drift over the reef, watching tropical fish and coral formations. If sea conditions shift, the captain may take you to Tortugas Reef, Lobos Reef, Punta Aguila or Palominitos Reef instead—the destination changes, but the reef snorkeling stays.

Lunch is a buffet served on the boat—a main course, fruit and salad bar, plus soda, water and alcoholic drinks (beer and cocktails for guests 21 and older). All snorkeling gear is provided, and the guide stays with the group throughout, offering direction in English or Spanish. The whole experience runs 6 hours from pickup to drop-off.
