The experience
Two hours, starting at sunset or early evening depending on the day's light. You arrive 30 minutes early for a safety orientation and "Lesson 101" on how to handle the kayak: getting in and out, paddling technique, what to expect in the dark. Then you launch from Kayak Village in Fajardo and paddle into the mangrove canal, where your marine biologist guide points out wildlife and explains the ecosystem as you move through it. The kayaks are tandem (two-person), so you'll share one with another guest unless you book both seats.
The lagoon itself is where the bioluminescence happens. When you paddle, the microorganisms in the water light up in response to movement: the brighter the night, the more visible the glow. The guide carries a tarp if needed to block light pollution and enhance what you see. Intensity varies by season and conditions. The phenomenon is visible year-round but unpredictable in brightness. The mangrove canal can get crowded with other tour groups, especially popular nights, and you may bump kayaks along the way. If conditions warrant, the company adds extra guides for safety.
Expect to get completely wet. Wear clothes and shoes that can get soaked, and bring a change of clothes and towel for after. The company provides lifejackets with safety whistles, paddles, bug repellent, water and snacks. You must be able to row the kayak yourself, get in and out without help, and maneuver it. Kayaks have a 240-pound weight limit per person, checked on-site. The tour runs rain or shine.
Is this one for you?You paddle the kayak yourself in a shared tandem boat, so this suits anyone who wants to actively move through the water rather than watch from a stationary point, and the marine biologist guide means you get accurate information about what you're seeing instead of guessing. Book the earlier sunset departure if you're new to kayaking or uncomfortable in darkness. The later evening trip is for paddlers ready for the full dark-water experience.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English and Spanish.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (6 to 12 years). Children under 6 can't be included in the booking.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What is Laguna Grande and why does it glow?
Laguna Grande is the world's only bioluminescent lagoon, located near Fajardo. It glows because of millions of dinoflagellates: single-celled organisms that produce light when disturbed by movement. Paddling through the water causes them to illuminate, creating a glowing effect in the darkness.
Do I need kayaking experience to book this?
You don't need prior experience, but you must be able to row the kayak yourself, get in and out on your own, and maneuver it. The company offers an earlier sunset tour if you're an inexperienced kayaker, so you can see where you're going and build confidence before the darker evening trip.
Will I be paddling alone or with someone else?
All kayaks are tandem (two-person), so you'll share with another guest unless you book both seats. You paddle together and both contribute to moving the kayak through the water.
What should I bring and wear?
Wear clothes and shoes that can get wet. You will get completely soaked. Bring a change of clothes and a towel for after the tour. The company provides lifejackets, paddles, bug repellent, water and snacks. You don't need to bring your own gear.
How dark does it get, and what if I'm uncomfortable in the dark?
The mangrove canal gets quite dark in the evening, which is when the bioluminescence is most visible. If you're afraid of darkness, a first-time kayaker, or have small kids, the company strongly suggests booking the earlier sunset trip instead, when you can see your surroundings and adjust to the environment.
What happens if the bioluminescence is dim or not visible?
The intensity of the glow varies by season and conditions and is unpredictable. It can range from minimal to very bright. The phenomenon is visible year-round, but brightness depends on water temperature, plankton density and other natural factors beyond the guide's control. Tours run as scheduled regardless.
