The experience
Mateus meets you at the Iron Gate and walks you through the University of Coimbra, founded in 1290 and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. He explains the university's traditions and the iconic black capes students wear, then shows you the exterior of the Joanina Library, one of Europe's most beautiful baroque libraries built in 1717 with 60,000 volumes inside. You'll see the university's main courtyard, once a royal palace, which opens onto sweeping views of the city and the Mondego River below.
The route descends through the medieval heart of Coimbra, passing the Sé Nova, a 17th-century Jesuit church with an ornate interior, and the 12th-century Sé Velha, a Romanesque cathedral where Portugal's second king was crowned. Walking the cobbled Rua de Quebra Costas, Mateus tells the story of Fado de Coimbra and the tragic love of Pedro and Inês de Castro. You'll pass through the Almedina Tower, the last remaining gate of Coimbra's medieval Arab walls, then reach Rua Ferreira Borges, the main pedestrian street lined with shops and cafés.
The tour ends at Santa Cruz Monastery, where Portugal's first two kings are buried, and then by the Mondego River with views back toward the old town and the university perched on the hill. Along the way, Mateus shares real-time local tips on where to eat, drink and explore as you pass by the spots themselves.
