From there, the route climbs through downtown Coimbra into the high zone of the city, moving through narrow streets and staircases that wind past the Almedina Arch, Toll Square, the Old Cathedral and the New Cathedral. The National Pantheon sits along this path, and the Botanical Garden of the University of Coimbra opens onto the hillside. At the top stands the University of Coimbra itself, the oldest university in Europe.

A qualified guide walks the entire route with you, speaking English or Portuguese, and carries a camera to photograph the group throughout the day. The guide knows the history and the hidden corners: the old wall sections that frame the adventure, the stories tied to each staircase and square.
