Step-by-step itinerary

Explore São Jorge Island highlights

  • Visit coastal fajã and lagoon
  • Descend to lava-formed fajã and natural pool
  • Swim if weather permits
  • Walk through forest park trails

The experience

São Jorge is 60 km long but only 8 km wide, so the volcanic highlands, steep cliffs and Atlantic Ocean stay in view throughout the day. Rather than lock to a fixed route, the guide adjusts the stops and timing based on weather and local conditions, which means you experience the island at its best instead of fighting the day's constraints. An English-speaking guide travels with the group and explains the geology, ecosystems, traditions and human history behind what you're seeing, not just the names of the places.

The tour typically includes three main stops. One fajã (a coastal platform formed by material that fell from the cliffs above) has a distinctive lagoon system, the only one of its kind in the Azores, and you'll see how earthquakes and erosion have continuously reshaped it. Another stop descends to one of the largest lava-formed fajãs on the north coast, where you can explore the volcanic shoreline and visit Poça Simão Dias, a natural pool ringed by basalt formations, and when sea conditions permit, you can swim here. A third stop takes you through one of the island's largest forest parks, covering about 12 hectares, where cryptomeria trees, ferns, hydrangeas, streams and natural springs show a different side of São Jorge's landscape.

Lunch is included in the day, and a snorkeling mask is provided. The small group size, a maximum of 8 participants, keeps the experience personal and means the guide can adjust the pace and stops to what the group wants to see. Hotel pickup is arranged, and the tour suits all fitness levels.

Top questions

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What are the fajãs on São Jorge and how were they formed?

Fajãs are coastal platforms created when volcanic material and rock fell from the towering cliffs above, a process that continues to be shaped by earthquakes and erosion. The tour visits two of them: one with a distinctive lagoon system unique to the Azores, and another formed by lava flows on the north coast, where natural pools like Poça Simão Dias sit surrounded by basalt rock.

Can I swim or snorkel during this tour?

Swimming and snorkeling are possible when weather and sea conditions allow. A snorkeling mask is provided, and the guide will choose stops where it's safe to enter the water. Because the itinerary adapts to conditions rather than following a fixed schedule, the guide can take advantage of good days to add these activities.

How many people will be on the tour with me?

The tour has a maximum of 8 participants, so the group stays small and the guide can adjust the pace and stops to what everyone wants to see.

What's included in the price?

Lunch, transportation by van, a snorkeling mask, and the services of an English-speaking guide are all included. Hotel pickup is arranged as part of the booking.

How long is the full day tour?

The tour runs for 8 hours, which leaves room for other activities earlier or later in your day.
