The experience

If you've just arrived on Flores or have a single free afternoon, this tour covers the island's geography and culture without needing a rental car. The day runs seven hours and moves through a sequence of stops rather than a fixed itinerary: your guide adjusts based on conditions and the group's pace. You'll see three viewpoints (Caimbros, Cedros and Ilhéu Furado) that frame the coast and Corvo Island, then move inland to volcanic lakes: one tranquil lagoon on the central plateau popular for birdwatching, Lagoa Negra with its dark deep waters, and two more at Caldeira Rasa and Caldeira Funda. The guide explains the geology and local history at each stop.

Two waterfall walks break up the viewpoint stops. Poço da Ribeira do Ferreiro involves about 1.5 km on foot through a valley with cascades dropping multiple levels. Poço do Bacalhau is a shorter stop at a waterfall flowing into a natural pool where you can swim if conditions allow. You'll also visit Fajã Grande, the westernmost village in Europe, and the Fajã Grande lighthouse on Monchique Islet for a view of the Atlantic and coastal waterfalls found nowhere else. The Machado Museum holds local artefacts and photographs. The owner makes liqueur on the island and offers a sample. Rocha dos Bordões shows vertical basalt columns and their geological formation. Lunch happens midday at a regional restaurant with an all-you-can-eat buffet of local dishes. One drink per person (juice, water, beer or wine) is included.

Transport is in a Fiat Talento for groups up to eight or a Dacia Jogger for smaller groups, both air-conditioned with child seats available. The guide speaks English, Spanish, Portuguese or French. Pickup from your accommodation is included, and the tour suits all fitness levels, though the 1.5 km walk to one waterfall requires trainers. Infants can travel in a pram or specialized infant seat.

Is this one for you?Pickup from your hotel or accommodation means you don't need a rental car to see the full island. The guide handles the route, timing and stops, which works well if you've just landed or have only one free afternoon to cover Flores' lagoons, waterfalls and villages in a single day.
