The minivan is already rolling when you settle in—your driver has timed the pickup to catch the morning light at Sagres, and the air conditioning kicks in as you leave Lagos behind. The Fortress of Sagres sits on a headland where Henry the Navigator once ran his School of Navigation, and walking the perimeter trail, you stand where centuries of explorers planned their routes across unknown water. The famous compass rose is still there, worn into stone, and the cliffs drop away so steeply that you understand why this place felt like the edge of something.

After Sagres, the route swings to the fishing port viewpoint—a quick stop where the south coast spreads out below you, and Martinhal beach sits in the distance with its small islands.
