The experience
The boat leaves Olhão at 1pm and heads into the canals that run in front of the town, then out to the barrier islands protecting the Ria Formosa. The route is built around two stops: Culatra, where you have time to walk the village or eat fresh fish at one of the local restaurants, and Farol island, where you get another chance to explore. Between stops and on the way back, the guide points out the tuna factories and fishing harbour that define this part of the coast.
Culatra sits on an island with nearly 1,000 residents whose livelihood comes almost entirely from fishing. The village has the infrastructure of a small town (shops, a school, a church, a medical office), but the restaurants are the draw: they serve the catch of the day. You can eat at a table or pack a picnic and sit on the beach. The stop gives you enough time to do either without rushing.
The tour runs four hours total and returns to Olhão by around 5pm. A guide travels with the group and speaks live commentary in English, Spanish, Portuguese or French, so you hear the story of what you're passing as you pass it. The boat is wheelchair accessible, and all areas and surfaces work for wheelchairs. Infants can travel in a pram or stroller, and service animals are welcome.
