The Experience

I’ll admit, climbing into a sidecar in Porto wasn’t on my list. But there I was, helmet a bit crooked, feet dangling while João—our guide—grinned and revved the engine. The first jolt down those cobbled streets made me laugh out loud. Not glamorous at all, but somehow perfect. We started right at the Porto Cathedral, its stones still cool from last night’s rain. João pointed at carvings I’d never have noticed and told us how the city grew around this spot—he called it “the old heart.” I could smell coffee drifting from somewhere nearby. The sidecar tour had barely begun and already felt like we were seeing the real Porto.

We wound through Miragaia’s narrow lanes toward the Douro river—honestly, I lost track of which street was which because everything smelled faintly of grilled fish and laundry soap. João pulled over for photos every time I gasped or pointed (which was often). He showed us blue tile murals tucked away from crowds—I tried to pronounce “azulejo” right but he just laughed and said close enough. Down by Massarelos, the river looked almost silver under the clouds, and for a second it was just quiet except for a tram bell somewhere far off.

Later we zigzagged up steep hills to Virtudes and Vitória. My legs were stiff but João kept chatting about old families who used to live here; he waved at an old woman hanging sheets from her window who waved back like she knew him (maybe she did?). At Clérigos Tower he insisted we get out for a proper look—“You don’t come to Porto and skip this,” he said—and even though I’m not much for towers, that view stuck with me.

The best part? Crossing over to Gaia in the sidecar with Dom Luis I Bridge overhead—it’s not Eiffel but has its own kind of charm (João had opinions about that). We stopped at Jardim do Morro where everyone seemed to be taking photos of Porto’s rooftops glowing in late afternoon light. He handed us bottled water without asking; small thing but thoughtful. By then my hair was wild and my cheeks hurt from smiling so much. If you’re thinking about a day trip in Porto that isn’t just walking behind an umbrella or crammed in a bus… well, this is it.

What’s included

Your day includes private hotel pickup and drop-off by classic sidecar motorcycle with your own local guide/driver. Helmets (and raincoats or blankets if needed), bottled water to keep you going between stops, phone charging if you bring your cable—and plenty of time for photos as you explore both sides of Porto’s riverfront neighborhoods before heading back home grinning like I did.
