The experience

The tour starts at Largo do Miranda with views over Funchal's bay, then climbs uphill to Pico do Arieiro at 1,818 meters. From there you see across Ponta de São Lourenço, Paúl da Serra, Curral das Freiras and Porto Santo. The 4x4 then heads toward Santo da Serra for an off-road section through endemic and introduced forest with an open roof. The terrain is rough enough that this stretch feels genuinely different from a standard drive.

On the way back down to the south coast, the route passes terraced farmland clinging to steep slopes, the kind of landscape that shows how Madeiran farmers work the hillsides. A stop at Cristo Rei, one of the island's most recognizable viewpoints, closes the morning portion. The jeep tour ends at Funchal's Harbor at 1:30 pm, where you have time before the afternoon boat departs.

The dolphin and whale watching trip leaves at 3:00 pm and runs until 6:00 pm. A professional guide speaks English or Portuguese throughout the 4x4 portion. Pickup is free from central Funchal or the port. Drop-off at the harbor is included, though you'll need your own way back to your hotel after the boat returns.
