Madeira Whale & Dolphin Watching with Marine Biologist
Wild Madeira sea life up close with expert marine biologist guide
You’ll head out from Machico with a marine biologist and local crew searching for whales and dolphins along Madeira’s wild coast. If conditions allow, you might even swim with dolphins—otherwise just watching them leap is its own thrill. Raincoats and life vests are included so you can focus on the sea (and maybe your Portuguese pronunciation).

The Experience
The first thing I remember is the way our skipper, João, grinned when we asked if we’d really see whales. “We’ll try everything,” he said, and then winked at the marine biologist beside him. There was this salty tang in the air as we left Machico’s little harbor — you know that smell, half ocean, half diesel from the boat. The water out here on this side of Madeira feels rougher, wilder somehow, and I liked that nobody pretended otherwise.
Our guide, Sofia, kept pointing out shapes in the distance — sometimes it was just a wave tricking my eyes, but then suddenly she’d shout “Dolphins!” and everyone scrambled to one side. I’m not sure what I expected from a whale and dolphin watching trip (I’ve done those glass-bottom boats before — not the same), but there’s something about seeing a pod of spotted dolphins slice through real waves that makes you feel kind of tiny and lucky at once. Sofia explained how their spotter on land radios in sightings — old-school teamwork meets science.
I tried to say “golfinho” like Sofia did (she laughed at my accent), and then she handed me a raincoat because apparently even sunny days can turn sideways here. We didn’t get to swim this time — only certain dolphins are okay for that and they were moving too fast today — but honestly, just being close enough to hear them breathe felt special. There was this moment where everything went quiet except for their splashes and some kid giggling behind me. I still think about that silence.
What’s included
Your outing includes a professional raincoat and life vest for each person—helpful since Madeira’s weather changes fast—and you’ll have both a marine biologist guide onboard plus a spotter on land helping find wildlife during your 2–2.5 hour journey from Machico.
