The Experience

The Blandy's Wine Lodge sits in Funchal and opens to visitors Monday through Saturday. A brand ambassador leads you through the different areas of the lodge, walking you past the production process and sharing how Madeira wine is made, then pours three tastings at the end. The whole tour takes about 90 minutes. Tours run in English, Spanish, Portuguese, French and one additional language, so you can book in whichever suits you — just let the operator know when you reserve.

At checkout you pick one of three routes. The base option is the wine tasting alone. If you want to build a longer afternoon, add the cheese stop: after the lodge, you'll head to an independent artisan cheese shop a few minutes away and taste three Portuguese cheeses with an extra glass of wine (including a pineapple wine option). The third choice extends the day further with the Foodie Tour, which tacks on six more stops around the city for tapas, pastries and additional cheeses, turning the wine lodge into the opening act of a full gastronomic route.

The lodge is wheelchair accessible throughout, and all surfaces and areas are navigable. Public transportation options sit nearby if you're not driving. Minimum age is 18 for the wine tastings.
