The Experience

Santana sits at the top of the north coast, and the tour starts there—a high viewpoint where you can see the whole city spread below. From there the day moves through the quieter parts of the island: a glass walk platform on the northeast edge, a waterfall tucked away on an offroad track, a stop at a local coffee shop, and the town center where the traditional Santana houses still stand with their painted A-frame roofs and small gardens. Private transportation means you don't navigate the winding roads yourself.

After the morning on the coast, you arrive at Quinta do Barbusano, a vineyard planted high in the mountains above São Vicente. A guide walks you through the vineyards first, explaining how wine gets made in Madeira's climate and altitude—the conditions that shape the taste. Then comes the tasting: six wines, one after another, each one different. The lunch that follows is spetada, a beef skewer cooked on sticks of laurel wood, served with caco (local flat bread), potatoes and salad. Dessert is homemade passion fruit pudim with a glass of fortified Madeira wine, then coffee.

The wine tasting and lunch are paid separately at the vineyard (card accepted): 65€ per person for the full meal with all six wines included, or 18.50€if you want just the tasting without lunch. Coffee at the morning stop is part of the tour price.
