The experience

Santana sits at the top of the north coast, and the tour starts there. A high viewpoint where you can see the whole city spread below. From there the day moves through the quieter parts of the island: a glass walk platform on the northeast edge, a waterfall tucked away on an offroad track, a stop at a local coffee shop, and the town center where the traditional Santana houses still stand with their painted A-frame roofs and small gardens. Private transportation means you don't navigate the winding roads yourself.

After the morning on the coast, you arrive at Quinta do Barbusano, a vineyard planted high in the mountains above São Vicente. A guide walks you through the vineyards first, explaining how wine gets made in Madeira's climate and altitude: the conditions that shape the taste. Then comes the tasting: six wines, one after another, each one different. The lunch that follows is spetada, a beef skewer cooked on sticks of laurel wood, served with caco (local flat bread), potatoes and salad. Dessert is homemade passion fruit pudim with a glass of fortified Madeira wine, then coffee.

The wine tasting and lunch are paid separately at the vineyard (card accepted): 65€ per person for the full meal with all six wines included, or 18.50€if you want just the tasting without lunch. Coffee at the morning stop is part of the tour price.
