Summary

Jeep safari adventure from Funchal to volcanic pools and misty forests

You’ll ride bumpy mountain roads in a jeep with a local guide, wander through misty Fanal forest and ancient laurel trees, swim in Porto Moniz’s volcanic pools (if you dare), and stand above the clouds at Cabo Girão. Expect laughter, salty air, odd snacks — plus hotel pickup so you don’t have to stress about getting there.

I’ll admit, I was mostly curious about the black sand beach in Seixal — I’d seen photos but wasn’t sure if it would feel as otherworldly in person. Turns out, the sand is finer than I expected, almost silky between your toes, and the Atlantic air has this salty-sweet smell that clings to your hair. Our guide, Paulo, grew up nearby and kept pointing out things I’d never have noticed: old terraces cut into the hillsides, tiny fig trees growing out of cracks. He laughed when I tried to pronounce “Poças das Lesmas” (I definitely didn’t nail it), but he said even locals mess it up sometimes.

The jeep ride itself is…well, let’s just say you feel every bump. There’s a kind of thrill in bouncing along those narrow roads with cliffs dropping away on one side and clouds rolling over the Paul da Serra plateau. At Fanal forest, the light gets weird — soft and gold through twisted laurel trees, with cows just standing there like they own the place. It’s quiet except for some distant bells and wind in the leaves. If you’re into photography or just want to feel small for a minute, this place does it.

Lunch isn’t included but we stopped at a little spot in Porto Moniz where I ended up ordering grilled limpets — first time for me. They’re chewy but good with lemon (Paulo said “you have to try them at least once”). After that, most of us couldn’t resist dipping into those volcanic pools even though the water was colder than expected. The sun came out right then so it actually felt perfect — like you earned it after all that off-roading.

Cabo Girão was our last big stop — that glass skywalk is higher than my brain wanted to process (580 meters apparently). Some people hesitated before stepping out but honestly? The view over Câmara de Lobos and the ocean is something I still think about when I need a mental reset. We got dropped back at our hotel sunburned and tired in that good way. If you want a day trip from Funchal that’s more than just pretty views, this West Madeira jeep tour is worth it.
