The Experience

I was already a bit flustered because I’d forgotten my sunglasses in the hotel lobby (classic), but our driver, Rui, just grinned and said, “Don’t worry — you’ll want your eyes wide open for this.” We squeezed into the open-top jeep with two couples from Germany and set off from Funchal. The air was damp and smelled like eucalyptus as we climbed out of town. I kept thinking the clouds would clear, but honestly, the mist made everything feel more secretive — like we were sneaking into somewhere we weren’t supposed to see.

Rui kept pointing out things I’d never have noticed — tiny yellow flowers clinging to stone walls, or how the laurel trees in these UNESCO forests twist around each other like they’re gossiping. At one point he stopped the jeep so we could hear nothing but birds and distant water. It was weirdly quiet except for someone’s stomach rumbling (not mine this time). The road got bumpy after that — if you’ve never bounced along a muddy track with strangers laughing every time someone nearly loses their hat, well… it’s a special kind of bonding. We reached Porto Moniz just before lunch, where those volcanic pools look unreal — black rock against this almost electric blue water. I didn’t swim (too cold for me), but dipped my hand in and it felt sharp and fresh.

Later we headed east toward Santana. The houses there really do look like something out of a storybook: red doors, thatched roofs, and old women selling honey cake by the roadside (I bought one; it tasted smoky-sweet). Rui told us about his grandmother making poncha at home — he tried to teach us how to say “saúde” properly, but Li laughed when I tried to say it in Mandarin — probably butchered it. Somewhere between the taste of sugarcane rum and the smell of wet earth after rain, I realized how far from home I felt, but also oddly comfortable.

The drive back was quieter. Everyone seemed tired in that good way you get after a long day outside. I watched the light shift over the hills as we dropped back down toward Funchal. Still think about that view sometimes when I’m stuck on the subway at home.
