The Experience

We were barely out of Funchal when our driver João started telling us about his grandmother’s favorite bread — he even pointed out the bakery as we wound up toward Pico do Arieiro. The road climbed fast, clouds drifting low over the pines. At the top, I remember the wind biting through my jacket and the way everyone went quiet for a second, just looking at those wild ridges dropping away on both sides. It felt like standing at the edge of something much bigger than a viewpoint.

I’d never heard birds quite like the ones in Laurissilva forest — sharp calls echoing off mossy trunks while we walked the Levada dos Balcões trail. Our guide Ana stopped to show us tiny orchids growing out of wet stone. She said this forest’s been here since before people ever set foot on Madeira. I tried to imagine that while sipping cold air and watching clouds drift below us at Balcões viewpoint. The keyword “day trip Madeira” popped into my head because honestly, it didn’t feel like any day trip I’ve done before.

Santana was next — those thatched-roof houses are smaller than you think, almost toy-like. A woman named Dona Maria waved from her garden; Ana chatted with her in rapid Portuguese (I caught maybe two words). We tasted bolo do caco still warm from a roadside stall, garlicky and chewy. Then Porto da Cruz for rum — sweet smell everywhere, barrels stacked behind glass. I tried to say “aguardente” right but Li laughed (probably butchered it). The last stop was Ponta de São Lourenço: volcanic cliffs all red and black against a weirdly blue sea. Wind so strong it nearly took my hat off. I still think about that view sometimes when I’m stuck in traffic back home.
