Farmland terraces and village views on paths carved into the north coast

A 2-hour guided walk along the Referta and Castelejo coastal paths on Madeira's north shore, following routes locals have used for generations. The guide carries hiking staff, the van picks you up from your hotel, and the route stays easy enough for any fitness level. Not suitable if you have vertigo or spinal injuries.

The Experience

The walk starts on paths that have threaded through this part of Madeira for decades, built by farmers moving between their crops and lands on the steep north coast. You'll pass through small villages and across terraced farmland, and the guide will point out how the terrain shapes the way people live and work here — the effort it takes to reach a plot of land, the way water moves through the hillside, what grows where and why. Two hours on foot, mostly downhill or level, with the air-conditioned vehicle waiting to bring you back.

Your guide speaks English, Portuguese, French or German, depending on which departure you choose at checkout. They carry the hiking staff, so you don't need to bring your own, and they know the history and ecology of the island well enough to answer questions as you walk. The path itself is easy and charming, the kind of route that lets you notice details — the plants, the birds, the way the villages sit on the slope — without fighting the terrain.

Top questions

What's the Referta and Castelejo walk actually like on the ground?

The Referta and Castelejo paths are easy, mostly level or downhill routes that follow the way locals have moved through this farmland for years. You'll walk through small villages and past terraced crops on Madeira's north coast, with time to stop and look at how the landscape works and why people farm the way they do here.

How long does the hike take and what's included?

The walk takes 2 hours total. Pickup from your hotel is included, along with a hiking staff you can use if you want one, and the air-conditioned vehicle brings you back when you're done.

What language does the guide speak?

Your guide speaks English, Portuguese, French or German — you choose the language when you book, and the departure time is set for that language group.

Is this walk suitable for someone who's not very fit?

The route is suitable for all fitness levels because it's easy terrain and only two hours long. It's not recommended if you have spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health or vertigo, since the paths run along the slope and some sections have steep drops nearby.

What should I bring or wear?

Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring water and sun protection. The guide provides a hiking staff if you want one, so you don't need to bring your own gear.

Can I bring a baby or small child?

Infants can sit on an adult's lap during the vehicle ride, and specialized infant seats are available if you need one. The walk itself is easy, but you'll need to manage a child on a 2-hour hike on an uneven path.
