Most people sleep through sunrise in Madeira. You'll be picked up before dawn in Funchal or Caniço, driven 20 to 45 minutes into the mountains, and dropped at Pico do Arieiro just as the light starts breaking. That's the whole point — you get the hike to Pico Ruivo on your own terms, moving at whatever pace feels right, without a guide herding the group or stopping every five minutes for photos.

The trail itself runs 11 kilometers from Pico do Arieiro down through Pico Ruivo — Madeira's highest point at 1,862 meters — and out to Achada do Teixeira, taking around four and a half hours depending on how you move. It's medium-hard terrain, which means steep in places and exposed, with a few tunnel sections carved into the rock and the famous "stairs to heaven" that look exactly like they sound. The weather shifts as you descend — you'll start above the clouds and walk through them, which sounds cliché until you're actually inside it and can't see more than ten meters ahead. The views, when they clear, reach across the whole island.

You're not alone on the mountain, but you're not tied to anyone either. Other guests from your van are somewhere on the same trail, and you can hike together or separately. The driver meets you at the end in Achada do Teixeira and takes everyone back to their accommodation, so you don't have to figure out how to get down or arrange a second ride. On the way back, you'll pass the triangle houses of Santana without stopping — they're visible from the road if you're looking.

Groups stay under eight people, which keeps the van from feeling crowded and means pickup doesn't take forever. Taxes are included in the price.
