Lisbon Kayak Snorkeling Tour at Luiz Saldanha Marine Park
Paddle into a protected marine reserve most visitors never reach
Snorkel in the Professor Luiz Saldanha Marine Park near Lisbon by kayaking from Praia do Crier, a private base camp on the Arrábida coast. You paddle past a 17th-century hermitage altar carved into a natural grotto, stop at a hidden beach for coffee, then enter the marine reserve where the water is clearest. A guide reads the currents and adjusts the day to the group and the sea conditions.

The experience
The day starts at Praia do Crier, a beach tucked into the Arrábida UNESCO Biosphere where your guides meet you with kayaks, wetsuits and snorkel gear. Tiago knows this coastline from the land side: its history, its changes, the small details most people pass by. António reads the ocean: he watches the currents and decides where the group can safely paddle and when to enter the water. Together they keep the experience personal and flexible, adjusting to what the sea allows and what the group needs. After a security briefing and equipment check, you push off into the bay that has sheltered travelers for centuries.
The route depends on the currents, but if conditions allow, your first stop is a natural grotto with traces running back to pre-historical times and a small Christian hermitage altar built around the 17th century. You paddle back out to sea and make for a hidden beach where you pause for tea or coffee and take in the surrounding landscape. From there, you enter the snorkeling zone next to the fully protected marine reservation, the Professor Luiz Saldanha Marine Park, where the water clarity and marine life are what draw you here. If time and currents permit, you might paddle to Pedra da Anicha, a tiny island just offshore with its own picturesque appeal.
The full day runs eight hours from base camp, where toilets, storage and a shower are available. You travel to Praia do Crier by air-conditioned vehicle, and depending on your option, pickup is arranged from Lisbon or you meet directly at the beach. Bring your own water. Everything else (snorkel masks, fins, wetsuits, kayaks, paddles and buoyancy aids) is provided. The activity is fully insured and certified, with guides speaking English, Spanish or Portuguese. Minimum age is 12.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English, Spanish and Portuguese.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What is the Professor Luiz Saldanha Marine Park like when you get there?
The Professor Luiz Saldanha Marine Park is a fully protected marine reserve where snorkeling happens in clear water with marine life that does not exist in the open bay. It is the reason the route includes a paddle to this specific zone rather than snorkeling from the starting beach.
Can I snorkel if I've never done it before?
Snorkeling is part of the activity, and the guides handle the equipment and teach you how to use it during the security briefing before you enter the water. The experience is aimed at relaxation and enjoyment, and the guides adjust the time in the water to the group and the conditions.
What happens if the currents are not good on the day I go?
The guides read the currents and decide the route based on what is safe and possible that day. If conditions do not allow the full route to the hermitage grotto or the marine reserve, the day adjusts to what the sea permits, but you still paddle and snorkel in the bay and along the Arrábida coast.
How long does the kayaking part take?
The full day is eight hours from base camp, which includes the security briefing, equipment setup, the paddle to the snorkeling zone, stops at the hidden beach and the marine reserve, and the paddle back. The time on the water depends on the currents and the group's pace.
Is there a base camp with facilities?
Praia do Crier is your base camp, where you meet the guides and get your equipment. Toilets, storage space for your belongings and a shower are available there, and a water dispenser is on site.
