Kayaking and snorkeling near Lisbon: Arrabida beach day
Paddle to a secret beach and dive into waters the Atlantic keeps to itself
Kayaking and snorkeling activity departing from Lisbon city center to Arrabida beach, a 45-minute paddle through the sea of Arrabida to a wild beach known as the pearl of the Atlantic. You paddle your own kayak, snorkel in emerald and blue waters, and eat lunch on the beach, with a live English-speaking guide, all equipment, and refreshments included. The day runs 8 hours and operates in all weather; children from age 3 are welcome.
The Experience
The paddle starts from Lisbon city center and heads 45 minutes out to Arrabida beach, a stretch of coast European Best Destinations named the best in Europe in 2017. You'll be equipped with everything before you leave—kayak, snorkel gear, life jacket—and the guide, Nuno or Eduardo, paddles alongside. The water shifts from open sea to the sheltered coves where the beach sits, and the cliffs rise behind it. Bring sunscreen and sunglasses; the sun reflects hard off the water.
Once you reach the beach, you get time to snorkel in the emerald and blue waters, exploring what the Atlantic keeps close to shore. The guide stays with the group and points out what's there. After the water, lunch happens on the sand—real food, not a protein bar—and the operator asks about dietary needs when you book. Bottled water and snacks are there the whole day, and you get live commentary from the guide about the coast and what you're seeing.
The full day is 8 hours from start to finish. It runs in all weather, so dress for whatever the day brings. Children from age 3 can join, though the operator notes you need at least a moderate level of fitness—paddling and snorkeling both take effort. Public transportation options are available near the meeting point if you're not driving yourself to the start.
