The tour begins at Restauradores Square, where Avenida da Liberdade ends at a plaza built as a tribute to Portugal's independence. The Church of São Roque, built in the 16th century as the first Jesuit church in Portugal, holds one of the world's most valuable chapels inside its plain exterior. Then comes Bairro Alto, Lisbon's nightlife district with over 500 years of history, followed by the transition through Campo de Ourique Market and past the São Carlos National Theatre—still Portugal's only venue dedicated to opera and symphonic music.

The walk closes at the Arco da Rua Augusta, the triumphal arch that appears in every Lisbon travel book, and ends at Commerce Square on the Tagus—one of Europe's most beautiful squares, where the city meets the river. The whole route takes about two and a half hours.
