The Experience

Largo do Carmo felt heavy and light all at once; maybe it was the way everyone went quiet looking up at those ruins, or maybe just because Sofia said her grandmother brought carnations here during the revolution. The Santa Justa Lift creaked as we rode up for that last view — rooftops stacked like origami and air that smelled faintly of sea salt and coffee grounds.
