You board a private yacht at Lagos Marina and cruise east to Benagil, anchoring inside the largest sea cave in the Algarve. Paddleboards and a kayak let you explore the water at your own pace; snorkelling gear is on hand if you want it. Drinks and tapas come throughout the afternoon, and the boat's Bluetooth system plays your own music. You return to Lagos after four to five hours, having skipped the clifftop crowds entirely.
"You want to see the caves? Don't fight the tour buses at the clifftop," our skipper said as we cast off from Lagos Marina. "We go straight to the mouth — you'll be inside while they're still waiting for photos." That's the difference between a private yacht and the crowds: you leave when you're ready, you stay as long as you want, and you're anchored inside the cathedral-sized cavern of Benagil with a glass in your hand instead of elbowing past fifty other people on a platform. The boat heads east from Lagos toward Portimão, hugging the coastline for about an hour, and then you're there — the largest cave formation in the Algarve, with a natural chimney opening to the sky and a pocket beach inside that you can only reach by water.
Once you're anchored, the paddleboards and kayak come out. Two standup boards fit adults and kids, and the inflatable kayak takes two adults plus a child if someone's small enough. The water inside the cave is calm — almost still — so even if you've never paddled before, you can handle it. The snorkelling gear is there if you want to drop below the surface, though honestly most people just float and stare up at the rock formations. The boat has a Bluetooth speaker, so someone usually plugs in music, and the skipper brings out the tapas and drinks — wine, beer, whatever you've asked for — and you're basically having lunch inside a geological wonder. It's the kind of thing that sounds expensive until you realize you're splitting the yacht cost across your whole group.
The whole day runs about four to five hours from departure to return, which is long enough to feel unhurried but short enough that you're not exhausted by the time you're back at the marina. Kids do well on this — there's no hiking, no long waits, and the boat ride itself is part of the entertainment. Infants can come too if they're comfortable on water; the skipper's seen it all. You'll want to bring a towel and sunscreen, and wear something you don't mind getting wet, but that's it. No tickets to buy at the cave entrance, no queues, no timing yourself against a tour schedule.
