Benagil Cave by Kayak: The Swimming Ban That Led to a Better View

You drive from Lagos to Benagil in a party van with beer and sangria, paddle a 2-seat kayak to the cave's entrance, float underneath the rock formations for 60 minutes, eat a picnic lunch on the beach, and see the cave from the clifftop before returning by early evening. Transport, life jackets, lunch and drinks are all included; the trip depends on calm seas.

The Experience

Here's the thing — you can't swim inside Benagil Cave anymore. The authorities shut that down in September 2023, which sounds like a letdown until you realize the kayak version is actually faster, steadier, and you get to keep your hands free to take photos instead of treading water. Vagabundo Travel runs two 2-seat kayaks out of Lagos, and the whole operation moves quicker than the rental outfits at Benagil itself because they're not dealing with the usual beach chaos. You leave Lagos in their van around 9am (they don't specify the exact time, but it's early enough to beat the crowds), drive 40 minutes down the coast with beer and sangria already flowing, and by mid-morning you're paddling out to the cave.

The paddle itself is about 60 meters — not far, but long enough that you notice the water color change and the cave getting bigger as you approach. Life jackets, boards and inflatables are provided, so even if you're not a confident swimmer, you're not fighting the ocean. The kayak sits you low enough that the cave entrance feels genuinely massive when you're underneath it, and because you're stable on the water rather than splashing around, you actually see the rock formations, the light hitting the sand inside, the whole geometry of the place. After that, you head back to the beach setup — shade, towels, beach games — and eat lunch while the sun's still high. The food is real: deli sandwiches with ham, chorizo, cream cheese, hummus, vegetables, bread, chocolate and crisps, plus proper vegan and vegetarian options. Then there's a clifftop walk to see the cave from above, which gives you the postcard angle you came for. The van picks you up around 6:30 or 7pm and drives you back to Lagos.

One hard constraint: this trip lives and dies by weather. If the waves at Benagil are rough enough that lifeguards raise a yellow or red flag, the kayaks don't go out. Vagabundo says they'll try to tell you before your booking date if conditions look bad, but it's the Atlantic, so there's always a chance. That's not a flaw in the product — it's just the reality of paddling in Portugal. If you're flexible about rescheduling or you're visiting for a few days, it's worth booking.

Is this one for you?Pick this if you want to see Benagil without arranging your own transport, kayak rental or food — the van handles the drive, the kayaks are faster than beach rentals, and lunch is already packed. The small group size and included drinks make it feel less like a tour and more like a day out with people who know the coast.
