Step-by-step itinerary

Gravel bike tour around Lagos and Alvor

  • Meet local guide and get bike
  • Ride in Lagos with ocean views
  • Cycle around Alvor Lagoon
  • Explore countryside with salt pans
  • Finish at Lagos castle viewpoint

The Experience

You meet your guide in Lagos and get fitted to a KTM Gravelator—a gravel-specific bike that handles the mix of surfaces ahead. The group stays small, capped at four riders, so the pace stays relaxed and the guide can adjust to how everyone is moving. From there you head into the countryside surrounding the city, trading the tourist routes for gravel roads and quiet country lanes that locals ride.

The ride loops around Alvor Lagoon, one of the Algarve's most visited natural sites, but you approach it on the back roads instead of the main paths. You pass traditional Portuguese houses, historic salt pans and golden hay fields—the kind of bucolic landscape that makes the region what it is. Depending on the season, keep your eyes open for flamingos and herons around the lagoon, and horses and cattle grazing in the fields beyond. The two-hour loop gives you time to notice these things without rushing through them.

The ride finishes in the heart of Lagos, in front of the historic castle, where you get a view across to Ribeirinha and the point where the river meets the Atlantic. Safety equipment—helmet and first aid—is included, as is third-party insurance. The guide carries the experience of a licensed company that has been running these rides for years.

What’s included
