Lagoa do Fogo sits in the island's interior, and a 4x4 is what gets you there without a rental car. The jeep holds up to six passengers, so the group stays small and the driver can adapt the route to what interests you: longer at the waterfall, a quick pass through the thermal pools, an extra stop at a viewpoint. Your guide is a certified local who speaks English, Spanish or Portuguese and knows which roads are passable after rain and where the light hits best for photographs.

The route climbs to Miradouro da Barrosa, the second-highest point on the island, then descends to closer views of the lagoon itself. Salto do Cabrito waterfall is a stop where you can walk to the base. Santa Bárbara Beach, famous for surfing, breaks up the inland stretches. The northern cliffs appear on the drive back. Caldeira Velha's thermal pools are optional: some groups skip them to spend more time elsewhere, others go straight there at the end.
