The experience

The Rio Lima run between Ponte da Barca and Ponte de Lima is built for paddlers new to moving water. You'll cross low-grade rapids and weirs: the kind that don't demand technical skill, just steady paddle strokes and a guide's eye on the current. The valley itself is the draw: no industrial noise, no pollution, just the sound of water and the banks rising around you. A monitor stays in the water the whole time, and a support vehicle tracks the group from the road above, so help is never far if someone needs it.

You get a sit-on-top kayak, a paddle, a personal flotation vest and a helmet. In cold months or rough weather, a 4:3 neoprene wetsuit comes with it. Halfway through the descent, the group pulls over for an energy break: bars, biscuits, juice, water and hot tea if the day is chilly. At the end, while you change into dry clothes, the support team drives the kayak operators back to wherever the group left its vehicles. Photos and video from the paddle are yours to keep, unedited.

The booking comes in two versions: one includes hotel pickup and return transport from Braga. The other is the paddle only, and you arrange your own way to the put-in. Either way, bring a swimsuit, dry shoes and a change of clothes for after, plus sunscreen and a towel. If you wear glasses, bring a retention cord.
