Step-by-step itinerary
Hike from plateau to coastal pools
- Walk through Central Plateau of São Jorge
- Reach Pico da Esperança summit
- Descend to Fajã do Ouvidor
- Relax and swim at Poça Simão Dias
The experience
The trail starts on the elevated interior of São Jorge, where the landscape opens into mountain pastures and wetlands shaped by volcanic activity. The Central Plateau is protected as a Ramsar site, a wetland of international importance, and the route stays inside the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and multiple conservation zones. You walk through low vegetation and endemic species adapted to the cool, humid conditions, with views across the narrow island and toward the Atlantic beyond. The terrain feels remote and untouched, far from the coastal settlements.
Pico da Esperança, the highest point on São Jorge at 1,053 metres, sits at the heart of the route. The trail skirts a volcanic crater where a small lagoon marks the dramatic highland landscape. On clear days, the elevated position reveals the island's long, narrow shape and the volcanic peaks of the Central Group forming a distinctive chain along the ridge. The exposed terrain here is where the scenery becomes most striking.
The descent follows forested areas and agricultural tracks down the green slopes toward the north coast. You arrive at Fajã do Ouvidor, a coastal platform formed by ancient lava flows, where the landscape shifts from mountain to basalt formations and steep cliffs. The hike finishes at Poça Simão Dias, natural volcanic pools where you can rest and, when conditions allow, swim in the clear Atlantic water. An air-conditioned vehicle brings you to the trailhead and collects you at the end.
