Paddle, stand and catch your first wave in one morning

A two-hour group surf lesson at Costa da Caparica teaches beginners how to paddle, catch waves and stand on the board, starting with land instruction on technique and ocean safety, then moving into the water with a live instructor. Gecko Surf School provides surfboards, wetsuits and leashes suited to your size and experience, plus accident insurance. The lesson is taught in English, Spanish, Portuguese or French.

The experience

You arrive with no surfing experience and leave having ridden your first waves. The lesson splits into two parts: a warm-up and land instruction on the beach where the instructor walks through the two core techniques (how to paddle and how to stand on the board), then the water practice where you apply what you learned. The instructor stays with the group in the water, offering real-time feedback as you paddle out and attempt to catch waves. The whole thing takes two hours.

Gecko Surf School handles the gear. Surfboards are matched to your weight, height and beginner level; wetsuits are fitted to water conditions; leashes keep the board tethered to you. Accident insurance is included. You show up in a swimsuit, and the school takes care of the rest. The group stays small enough that the instructor can watch each person and correct what matters: your paddle stroke, your timing on the wave, how you position yourself on the board before you pop up.

Costa da Caparica is a beach town south of Lisbon with consistent beginner-friendly waves. Public transportation runs nearby if you're coming from the city. The lesson works for anyone who has never surfed before and wants to meet other beginners learning at the same time.
