The experience
The hike starts near the Ermida de Santo António on São Jorge's north coast and follows the official PRC05SJ trail down a steep, dramatic path carved into tectonic cliffs. The descent crosses streams, waterfalls and natural springs where fresh water emerges directly from the rock, with wide views over the Atlantic opening up as you descend. This is not a gentle slope: the steepness is what has kept Fajã do Além isolated and preserved, cut off from the road network that connects the rest of the island.
At the fajã itself, the landscape tells the story of how island communities adapted to the volcanic terrain. You'll see old wine cellars, livestock pens, agricultural structures and areas once used for vineyards and yam cultivation. The guide explains the seasonal migrations known locally as "mudas": how families moved between the highlands and coast with the seasons, and how they shaped every building and terrace to fit the steep ground. The geology and ecology of the island emerge through the guide's university training in Environmental Sciences, grounding the cultural history in the actual landscape you're walking through.
The return follows the same dramatic cliff path back to the starting point. The full circuit covers 4.7 km with approximately 2.5 hours of actual hiking time, and the total outing runs around 3.5 hours from start to finish. Pickup is included, and the guide speaks English.

Is this one for you?The 3.5-hour total duration means you can fit this hike into a morning or afternoon on São Jorge and still have time for a meal or a visit to another part of the island. The steep descent and climb require real fitness and sure footing, so it suits hikers comfortable with demanding terrain and uneven ground, not a casual stroll.
Top questions
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What exactly is a fajã, and why is Fajã do Além so isolated?
A fajã is a coastal settlement built on a narrow strip of land between the sea and steep cliffs: in this case, tectonic cliffs that rise dramatically from the water. Fajã do Além has no road access, which is why the only way in or out is the steep historic walking trail you descend and climb on this hike. That isolation is what has kept the settlement and its traditional landscape so intact.
How steep is the descent, and what does the climb back feel like?
The initial descent is steep enough that it requires real effort and sure footing, especially on the way down. The climb back up the same path is demanding (you're ascending the tectonic cliffs you just descended), but the route is well-established and the guide is there throughout. The total hiking time is approximately 2.5 hours across the full 4.7 km circuit.
What will I learn about how people actually lived on São Jorge?
The guide explains the seasonal migrations called "mudas," when families moved between the highlands and the coast to tend different crops and animals at different times of year. You'll see the physical evidence: old wine cellars, livestock pens, terraced areas for vineyards and yams, and buildings constructed to fit the steep volcanic landscape. The guide's background in Environmental Sciences connects these structures to the geology and ecology that shaped how people had to build and farm here.
What's included in the hike, and what should I bring?
Bottled water and snacks are provided. You should wear sturdy hiking boots with good grip, bring a light rain jacket (weather on the island can change quickly), and wear sun protection. The hike crosses streams and waterfalls, so expect to get your feet wet and possibly splashed.
Does the hike go through protected natural areas?
Yes, the route crosses protected areas within São Jorge Natural Park and the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The guide is certified to lead in these zones and will explain the ecology and conservation of the landscape as you walk through it.
