Snorkel a European-best beach and sail past sea caves without leaving the boat twice

A three-hour boat tour from Sesimbra through Arrábida Natural Park takes you to five named beaches and Cabo Espichel, with snorkeling stops at Ribeiro do Cavalo—voted Europe's best beach in 2017—and Baleeira, where you'll learn about the region's whale-hunting history. The boat departs at 14:30 from Porto de Abrigo de Sesimbra; a regional liqueur is served at Baleeira (adults only); guides speak English, Spanish, Portuguese and French; children from age one are welcome.

The Experience

The boat leaves Porto de Abrigo de Sesimbra at 14:30 and heads west into Arrábida Natural Park, where the coastline opens into a sequence of beaches most people reach only by scrambling down cliffs or hiring a private boat. You'll stop first at Ribeiro do Cavalo, the beach that won the European title in 2017—the water is clear enough to snorkel straight from the boat, and the time in the water is yours to use. The tour then moves past Mijona and Inferno beaches (viewable from the water) and pulls in at Baleeira, where you step ashore for a second snorkel and a drink made in the Setúbal region, served only to adults.

From Baleeira, the boat sails toward Cabo Espichel, where the park's defining feature becomes visible: a run of sea caves and cliffs that rise directly from the water, and the Cabo Espichel Lighthouse, one of the oldest in the country, standing on the headland above. You see these from the boat—no second landing—then return to Sesimbra. The whole trip runs three hours. Infants and small children can travel in a pram or stroller; service animals are allowed; the meeting point is walkable from Sesimbra's center, and public transport stops nearby.

Is this one for you?The boat moves between stops without long waits on shore, so the pace stays steady and the time in the water is split across two beaches rather than concentrated in one. Top questions

Can I snorkel at both Ribeiro do Cavalo and Baleeira, or just one beach?

You snorkel at both stops. Ribeiro do Cavalo is the first snorkel, and Baleeira is the second, where you also have time ashore to walk the beach before the regional liqueur is served.

What is Ribeiro do Cavalo beach actually like when you get there?

Ribeiro do Cavalo is a small, cliff-backed beach accessible only by boat or a steep scramble down rock; the water is clear enough to snorkel from the boat without visibility trouble, and the beach itself is narrow and rocky rather than sandy.

Is the regional liqueur included, or do I pay extra for it?

The regional liqueur served at Baleeira is included in the tour price; it is served only to adults over 18.

What time does the boat return to Sesimbra?

The tour departs at 14:30 and runs for three hours, so the boat returns to Porto de Abrigo de Sesimbra around 17:30.

Can I bring a baby or toddler on this boat?

Children from age one are welcome; infants and small children can travel in a pram or stroller, and the boat accommodates service animals.
