The Experience

I’ll be honest — I almost bailed when I saw how chilly the Atlantic looked that morning in Alvor. But then Joana (our guide, who’s actually a marine biologist) handed me a wetsuit and just grinned like she’d seen this hesitation a hundred times. “Trust me,” she said, “it’s warmer in than out.” She was right. Once we slipped into the water near those secret caves, it felt like being let in on some local joke the tourists don’t get to hear.

The caves weren’t what I pictured at all — not dark or spooky, but full of sunlight pouring through holes in the ceiling. You could hear the sea echoing off the walls, and every now and then someone would laugh because their voice sounded so strange bouncing around in there. We floated over these underwater gardens (that’s what Joana called them), with fish darting just below. At one point I tried to name a fish in Portuguese; Li laughed so hard I nearly swallowed my snorkel. The main keyword here is snorkeling Alvor — but honestly it was more about drifting and watching tiny dramas play out under the surface.

We stopped for fruit and cheese on this little patch of sand — not another soul around except for a fisherman way off in the distance. The sun came out just enough to warm our faces while we ate. There was this salty tang in the air that made everything taste better, maybe from the seaweed drying nearby? We got tips from Joana about where else to go along the Algarve coast if we wanted more quiet spots (she scribbled names on my map with wet fingers). I still think about that view back toward Alvor, cliffs all golden and rough-edged against the water. The tour ended with sandy feet and hair full of salt — which is kind of perfect if you ask me.
